California Poppy, a native to the United States, is a cool weather annual or short-lived perennial. It does well in sandy, poor to average, well-drained soils in full sun. The plant grows in loose, free-branching mounds with cup-shaped, silky flowers that are most commonly bright orange. The flowers bloom during the summer and close up at night and in rainy or cloudy weather.
